Dozer Transport Planning Checklist for Heavy Haul

A dozer that is ready to work is not automatically ready to haul. The dozer transport planning checklist starts well before a truck arrives: confirm the machine’s actual transport dimensions, select a trailer around its weight and undercarriage, and make sure the route and receiving site can support the move. A missed detail can turn a one-day relocation into a permit revision, a rejected loading attempt, or a machine sitting at the gate while the crew waits.

For Southwest moves, the problem is often not simply mileage. A route from Phoenix to a Northern Arizona project may add elevation, restricted segments, and weather exposure. A move between Las Vegas and a mining or paving site may involve narrow access roads, utility lines, or a receiver that cannot accommodate a long RGN combination. Good planning treats the move as a field operation, not a freight quote.

Start With the Dozer, Not the Estimated Weight

The make and model are useful, but they are only the starting point. A Caterpillar D6, D8, or D9 can have significantly different transport requirements depending on blade configuration, ripper, cab guards, counterweights, track shoes, and added protection packages. Published operating weight is not always the number that belongs on a permit application or axle calculation.

Get the serial number, current configuration, and actual dimensions whenever possible. The heavy haul planner needs the overall length, width, height, and weight as it will sit on the trailer. If the blade can be removed, determine whether that saves enough width or height to justify the labor, handling equipment, and separate transport. Removing attachments can reduce permit complexity, but it also creates another piece to load, secure, unload, and reunite with the machine.

Track width deserves particular attention. Contractors sometimes assume a dozer is legal-width because the base machine is listed under 102 inches. Track shoes, blade corners, push arms, guards, or side-mounted components can change the real measurement. Width drives permit requirements, escort needs, route restrictions, and travel windows. Height is equally unforgiving. A machine that sits a few inches taller on one trailer than another can eliminate an otherwise practical route.

Choose the Trailer Around Ground Clearance and Axle Need

A lowboy is not one interchangeable piece of equipment. Trailer selection determines deck height, loading angle, weight distribution, turning behavior, and which roads are realistic after permits are reviewed.

For many dozers, a detachable gooseneck lowboy or RGN is the practical choice because the machine can drive onto the deck at ground level. That avoids relying on a loading dock or building a ramp at a remote site. The tradeoff is overall combination length and the need for enough room to detach, load, reconnect, and maneuver. An RGN may be the right trailer on the highway but the wrong trailer if the pickup yard has no clear approach or the delivery site is boxed in by excavations, parked equipment, or active crews.

A fixed-neck lowboy can work well for machines that can be loaded safely from a suitable ramp or dock. It may also provide a simpler configuration for certain weights and dimensions. But asking a dozer operator to climb a marginal ramp because the selected trailer is available is not a transport plan. The loading method must be safe for the operator, the trailer, and the machine’s center of gravity.

Axle count is driven by more than gross weight. A dozer’s track contact area spreads its weight over the deck, but the truck and trailer still have to distribute that load legally across axle groups. A heavier D8 or D9, especially with attachments, may require a multi-axle setup rather than a standard lowboy configuration. More axles can make a load legal and reduce pavement impacts, but they add trailer length, turning radius, permitting detail, and jobsite requirements. The best configuration is the one that is legal, controllable, and workable at both ends of the move.

Build the Permit Strategy Before Committing to the Route

One mistake contractors make is treating permits as paperwork that happens after dispatch. Permit strategy is route strategy. Oversize permits are issued for a specific load, configuration, and route. Change the trailer, axle spacing, width, height, or pickup location, and the approved plan may no longer apply.

A practical permit review looks at more than interstate miles. It considers bridge restrictions, local road authority requirements, construction zones, travel-hour limits, curfews, utility conflicts, and whether the final access road is even included in the permitted routing. On Arizona and Nevada work, state routes may be straightforward while county roads, municipal streets, mine roads, and the last mile create the real constraint.

Height needs to be confirmed after loading, not guessed from a spec sheet. If the route is tight on clearance, a lower deck trailer, blade removal, or a different route may be required. Trying to solve that at the pickup point is expensive. It may require unloading, changing equipment, revising permits, and losing the scheduled delivery window.

Escort requirements also depend on dimensions and jurisdiction. Pilot cars are not simply an extra line item. They affect departure timing, staging space, communications, and the ability to keep the load moving through restricted areas. For especially difficult corridors, utility coordination or a route survey may be justified before the move is scheduled.

Prepare the Dozer for Loading and Securement

The machine should arrive at the loading area clean enough to inspect, operable enough to load, and configured as quoted. Excess mud is not merely a housekeeping issue. It can hide tie-down points, drop onto public roads, affect measured width, and create problems during a roadside inspection.

Before dispatch, verify that the dozer starts, steers, brakes, and can be driven onto the trailer. If it is inoperable, disclose that early. A dead dozer may require winching, pushing, lifting support, or a different trailer arrangement. Each option changes time, equipment, risk, and possibly the pickup-site requirements. It is much better to plan for a non-running machine than discover it when the driver is positioned to load.

The operator should know where the machine will be loaded and whether the blade, ripper, or attachments need to be positioned in a specific way. Securement points must be accessible. Chains and binders need to restrain the dozer in all directions, and the final arrangement must protect hydraulic lines, steps, handrails, and cab components from contact with securement equipment. Experienced crews also look at how the blade and ripper affect deck loading, deck length, and clearance over the trailer structure.

Confirm Pickup and Delivery Conditions

A legal highway configuration does not guarantee a successful jobsite delivery. The site contact should provide a real loading location, not just a street address or project name. Confirm gate widths, turning room, surface condition, overhead lines, grade changes, parked equipment, and who has authority to clear the area.

For an RGN, the driver needs space to detach and reattach the neck. On soft desert soil, freshly watered subgrade, or a mine site after weather, that space may not support the tractor and loaded trailer. A Landoll tilt deck may solve a constrained loading situation for some equipment, but it is not automatically suitable for every dozer size or weight. The trailer must match the machine and the site, not just the availability board.

Delivery timing matters as much as delivery location. If the dozer is needed for a morning shift, unloading at 7:00 a.m. may already be late because the trailer still needs a clear work zone and an operator to receive the machine. Coordinate with the superintendent or equipment manager on who will be present, where the dozer will be staged, and whether the access route is open during the planned arrival window.

Use a Dispatch-Ready Dozer Transport Checklist

Before the move is released, confirm these details in one place:

  • Dozer make, model, serial number, operating condition, and final transport configuration

  • Actual loaded weight, width, height, and length, including blade, ripper, guards, and track shoes

  • Selected trailer type, axle configuration, loading method, and securement plan

  • Pickup and delivery contacts, operating hours, access conditions, staging room, and ground conditions

  • Permit route, travel restrictions, escort requirements, clearance concerns, and any utility coordination

  • Required equipment preparation, including cleaning, attachment removal, fuel considerations, and loose-item removal

  • Delivery schedule tied to the project’s actual need for the machine, not only the truck’s estimated arrival

The checklist is not meant to create more administration. It prevents the field surprises that cost the most.
