A forklift looks simple to move until it is halfway up the trailer and the rear end starts to feel light, or the mast height blows past legal clearance, or the consignee has no dock, no ramp, and no room to unload. That is usually when people realize that knowing how to haul a forklift is less about towing capacity and more about load geometry, securement, and jobsite reality.
Most forklift moves are not true heavy haul projects, but they still punish shortcuts. A 5,000-pound warehouse unit is one thing. A 20,000-pound pneumatic-tire lift with long forks, a high mast, and solid tires is a different move entirely. The trailer choice, loading direction, tiedown points, and route all depend on the actual machine, not the word forklift on a quote sheet.
How to haul a forklift starts with the actual machine
The first mistake contractors make is treating all forklifts as interchangeable. Before you schedule anything, confirm the make and model, operating weight, overall width, mast height lowered, fork length, tire type, and whether any attachments are installed. A side-shift carriage, fork positioner, paper roll clamp, or jib changes both dimensions and securement strategy.
Weight matters, but height usually causes more surprises. On many industrial forklifts, the lowered mast still stands high enough that the trailer deck height becomes the deciding factor. If you load a tall mast on a standard flatbed, you can create an avoidable overheight issue. A lower deck trailer often solves that problem without turning a routine move into a permit job.
Fork length is another detail people underestimate. Long forks can extend beyond the trailer nose or tail depending on loading direction. Sometimes removing the forks is the cleanest option. It takes a little more prep time, but it can reduce overall length, improve weight distribution, and make securement easier.
Picking the right trailer for forklift transport
There is no single best trailer for every forklift. The right answer depends on machine size, ground clearance, mast height, pickup conditions, and unload conditions.
A Landoll or tilt deck is often the practical choice for smaller to mid-sized forklifts, especially when there is no loading dock available. The approach angle is manageable, and you can load under the machine's own power if the surface is stable and the operator knows what he is doing. For warehouse forklifts with low ground clearance, this matters. Steep ramps and abrupt dovetails are how undercarriages, mast rollers, and fork heels get damaged.
A lowboy or RGN makes more sense as forklift size increases or mast height becomes the limiting factor. Larger pneumatic-tire forklifts, heavy industrial lifts, and rough-terrain units often sit better on lower deck equipment. The lower ride height can keep the load legal on height and give you more room to position the machine correctly over the axles.
A standard flatbed can work for some forklifts, but it is often chosen for the wrong reason - because it is available, not because it is ideal. If the machine loads easily, stays within legal height, and can be secured properly, fine. But if you need long ramps, better deck control, or lower loaded height, a flatbed becomes the expensive shortcut.
Loading direction is not automatic
People often ask whether a forklift should be loaded forward or backward. The honest answer is that it depends on where the weight is, where the tiedown points are, and how the machine sits on the trailer.
On many forklifts, the rear carries the counterweight, which is the heaviest concentrated part of the machine. That affects axle placement on the trailer. An experienced heavy haul team does not just drive it on and chain it down. They think about where that counterweight lands relative to trailer axles and tractor drives, and whether fork or mast position creates unnecessary overhang.
Sometimes loading with the forks trailing gives better overall placement. Sometimes the opposite is cleaner because it protects visibility, reduces overhang, or improves securement angles. What matters is keeping the machine stable on the deck and legal on axle weights.
Mast position matters too. The mast should typically be fully lowered and slightly tilted back if manufacturer guidance allows it. Forks should be lowered onto proper blocking or deck protection where needed, not left floating in a way that allows bounce or movement.
Securement is where routine forklift moves go wrong
Forklifts are compact, but that does not make them easy to secure. Their weight is concentrated, their wheelbase is short, and the rubber tires can allow movement if the machine is not blocked and chained correctly.
Use the manufacturer's designated tiedown points whenever possible. Chaining around the overhead guard, mast structure, steering components, or hydraulic lines is asking for damage. We have found that the problem is not usually a lack of chains. It is bad chain angles and lazy contact points.
A proper forklift securement plan usually includes direct tiedowns that control forward, rearward, and lateral movement, along with parking brake engagement and wheel chocking or blocking when appropriate. Forks and attachments also need independent attention if they can articulate or shift in transit. A paper clamp or side-shift carriage should never be treated like a fixed component.
One common misconception is that a small forklift can be secured like a pickup-sized piece of equipment. Not really. The center of gravity and tire behavior are different. Sudden braking can shift a forklift harder than people expect, especially if the deck is slick or the machine is sitting on steel tracks or plates.
Permits, legal height, and route planning
Not every forklift move needs permits, but enough of them do that you should check before dispatch, not after loading. Taller mast configurations, oversized widths on large industrial units, and heavier forklifts on certain trailer combinations can push a move out of standard legal limits.
Height is usually the first legal issue. In Arizona, Nevada, and Southern California, route planning gets more specific once a load goes overheight. You are no longer just choosing the shortest run between yard and jobsite. You are checking bridges, utility conflicts, railroad crossings, construction zones, and local access roads near the pickup and delivery points.
That matters even more in mining corridors, older industrial areas, and urban jobsite approaches where overhead obstructions show up late in the move. A machine that is legal on the interstate can still be a problem on the final two miles.
Axle weights can also become the deciding factor on heavier forklifts. A machine may be under gross weight for the trailer but still require careful placement to stay legal across the full combination. That is where trailer selection and load position work together. The cheapest trailer on paper is not the cheapest option if it forces permit changes or rerouting.
Pickup and delivery conditions matter as much as the road
A forklift move can be technically legal and still go bad at the site. Ask how the machine will be loaded and unloaded before you assign equipment.
If the forklift is dead, partially disabled, or has brake issues, that changes the plan. You may need a winch-capable trailer, a crane assist, or a different loading surface. If the site is dirt, loose gravel, or broken asphalt, that affects ramp loading and trailer setup. Rough-terrain forklifts tolerate poor ground better than cushion-tire warehouse units, but trailer access can still be the bigger problem.
Space is another issue people miss. Can the trailer line up straight for loading? Is there room to detach an RGN? Can a Landoll deploy safely without blocking a live lane or backing into a fence line? Tight yards and active jobsites often turn a simple forklift haul into a scheduling problem.
If delivery is time-sensitive, coordinate the receiving side just as carefully. A truck arriving with no unload plan is how detention starts and schedules slip. For multi-stop projects, this matters even more because a delayed first stop can wreck the rest of the day.
How experienced haulers think about forklift moves
The difference between a smooth move and a problem load usually comes down to asking the right questions early. Not just what is it, but how tall is it lowered, are the forks removable, is it running, where can it be loaded, and what is waiting at the other end.
