The I-17 corridor gains thousands of feet between the Valley and Flagstaff. The transport plan has to account for the complete combination, not only the machine's published operating weight.
A Caterpillar excavator, for example, may be within a workable gross weight on paper but still create a practical height issue when it is positioned on the wrong trailer deck or transported with a boom, stick, counterweight, or hydraulic attachment configured poorly. A dozer with a tall canopy or blade installed can create a different set of concerns. Customers often assume that a larger trailer always solves the problem. It does not. More axles can improve legal weight distribution, but they add length, turning considerations, and sometimes delivery-site complications. It can be efficient for machines that fit within legal or permitted dimensions and can be loaded safely over ramps.
An RGN is commonly the better choice when deck height is critical, the machine is very heavy, or drive-on loading is safer than ramp loading. A removable gooseneck reduces the loading angle and can make a real difference for low-clearance equipment, large dozers, and machines that should not be pushed up steep ramps. It also allows the load to sit lower, which can be the difference between a manageable height permit and a route that needs more review.
A Landoll tilt deck is useful for certain equipment, attachments, and smaller specialized moves, particularly when loading conditions favor a tilt deck over a detachable trailer. But it is not a substitute for an RGN when axle loading, deck height, or machine weight calls for a multi-axle heavy haul setup.

Axle Weight Matters More Than Gross Weight Alone

For a short-notice paving shutdown or an active mine repair, the added teardown time may not be worth it. For a tall or heavily concentrated load moving into a restricted site, it often is.
Permits Are a Route Decision, Not Paperwork at the End
Arizona oversize and overweight permitting should be considered before a truck is dispatched, not after the machine is loaded. Permit requirements can affect allowable travel windows, escort needs, approved route segments, height restrictions, and how the combination must be configured. The question is not just whether the truck can enter. It is whether it can enter, unload, turn around, and exit without blocking the operation or damaging the site.
A proper delivery review covers gate width, turning space, overhead utilities, ground bearing conditions, slope, snow or mud exposure, and the availability of a competent receiver. If a machine must be unloaded at a specific time because the access road is shared with crews or public traffic, that should be known before permit timing and dispatch are finalized.
