A 90,000-pound wheel loader can look like a straightforward move on paper: load it, secure it, deliver it. Transporting mining equipment in Arizona is rarely that simple. The machine’s weight is only one part of the plan. Overall width, loaded height, axle spacing, route restrictions, mine access roads, permit timing, and the condition of both loading areas can decide whether the move runs cleanly or burns a day.
Mining operations often work on tight production schedules, but rushing the transportation plan usually creates the very delay everyone is trying to avoid. An experienced heavy haul crew starts by defining the actual load and the actual route, then selects the trailer and axle configuration that make the move legal and practical.
Start With the Machine, Not the Trailer
The first question is not, “What trailer is available?” It is, “What does this machine weigh and measure in transport configuration?” That includes operating weight, width over tracks or tires, height at the highest fixed point, overall length, and where the weight sits once the machine is loaded.
A Caterpillar 980-class loader, for example, may be a different transport problem than an excavator with a similar published operating weight. The loader’s axle loads, tire placement, and height can influence trailer choice differently than an excavator’s concentrated track loading. A large dozer may fit a lowboy deck well but become excessively wide with blade and push arms installed. A drill rig may create a height issue long before it creates a weight issue.
Customers often assume published manufacturer specifications are enough for quoting. They are a starting point, not the final answer. Mine-specific attachments, rock guards, counterweights, tire options, full fuel tanks, and added wear protection can materially change the move. A loader with an oversized bucket left on, for instance, may require a wider route envelope or a separate attachment haul.
The best approach is to provide current measurements, photos from all sides, the machine serial or model information, and details on anything that cannot be removed. That lets the transporter assess transport dimensions instead of making assumptions from a generic equipment listing.
Trailer Choice Determines More Than Loading Ease
A standard lowboy is often the right answer for moderate-weight excavators, dozers, loaders, and support equipment. It provides a lower deck than a flatbed and keeps many machines below critical height thresholds. But a lowboy is not automatically the best option simply because the machine is heavy.
For equipment that needs a lower loaded height or a more controlled loading angle, a detachable gooseneck trailer, commonly called an RGN, may be the better choice. The deck can be lowered to the ground for drive-on loading, which is useful for tracked equipment and machines with limited ground clearance. It also avoids the steep ramps and transition points that can damage undercarriage components or create a loading risk.
A multi-axle configuration becomes necessary when total weight or axle loading exceeds what a conventional setup can legally carry. That does not mean adding axles is a casual upgrade. More axles can distribute weight properly, but they also add overall length, affect turning radius, complicate route selection, and may limit access on narrow mine roads or congested jobsites.
Landoll tilt decks have their place, particularly for machinery that cannot climb onto a deck safely or when loading conditions favor a lower approach. They are not a replacement for an RGN on every heavy move. A tilt deck can be efficient for the right machine and location, while an RGN often gives better height control and payload capacity for a larger mining unit.

Arizona Permits Are a Route Decision
Oversize and overweight permits are often treated as paperwork that happens after the haul plan is built. In practice, permit requirements shape the haul plan from the beginning.
Arizona’s long-distance mining and construction corridors can look open and uncomplicated. Interstate 40, US-93, Interstate 17, and Interstate 10 provide major connections, but the equipment still has to move from the highway to a mine entrance, equipment yard, rail spur, or remote project site. That final segment is frequently where the route becomes restrictive.
A permitted route may avoid low structures, weight-restricted bridges, tight ramp geometry, construction zones, or locations where a long multi-axle trailer cannot make the turn. A route that works for a 12-foot-wide excavator may not work for a 14-foot-wide loader with its attachment installed. Likewise, a route that is acceptable at legal weight may change completely once the load requires overweight authorization.
Permit lead time also matters. Routine oversize moves can often be planned efficiently, but unusual dimensions, high axle weights, utility conflicts, or local road restrictions can require additional review. Contractors should avoid scheduling a machine for first-shift production before confirming the permit path, escort requirements, and delivery window.
Height Is Often the Hidden Constraint
Weight usually gets the attention because it is easy to see on an equipment specification sheet. Height is the issue that can quietly eliminate routes. A tall drill component, high cab, exhaust stack, or machine positioned incorrectly on the trailer can create clearance problems that are not apparent until the route is reviewed.
This is why deck height matters. Dropping a machine onto an RGN well can save critical inches. Removing a stack, folding a handrail, detaching a boom section, or changing the machine’s orientation can also solve a height problem. Those choices need to be made before permits are submitted, not while the truck is waiting at the gate.
Prepare the Equipment for Secure, Legal Loading
The machine owner and the hauler both have responsibilities before loading begins. Equipment should be clean enough for the driver and loading crew to inspect tie-down points, tracks, tires, hydraulic lines, and attachment connections. Loose material in buckets, beds, or undercarriage areas should be removed. A load shedding rock or debris on the highway creates a safety issue and can stop the move.
Attachments should be evaluated individually. A blade, bucket, ripper, boom, counterweight, or drill mast may be safer and more economical to transport separately. Splitting a load can add another truck, but it may reduce permit complexity, lower the loaded height, improve securement, and make access into the delivery site much easier. It depends on the machine, route, and deadline.
Fuel level is another practical consideration. Full tanks add weight, and on a borderline overweight move, that added weight can matter. The goal is not to drain every machine unnecessarily. It is to account for fuel honestly when calculating axle weights and selecting the transport configuration.
The equipment also needs a qualified operator available at both ends. Mining equipment that arrives on time but cannot be unloaded because no operator is present is an avoidable delay. If the machine is inoperable, that must be known early so the hauling team can plan for winching, blocking, lift support, or a different loading method.
Mine-Site Logistics Can Make or Break Delivery
A highway-legal plan does not guarantee a mine-site-ready plan. Access roads may have soft shoulders, narrow switchbacks, steep grades, overhead utilities, active haul traffic, or limited room to turn around. The delivery point may be several miles beyond the main gate, and a long RGN combination needs enough space to enter, position, unload, and exit safely.
One mistake contractors make is giving the haul team the mine address without identifying the exact unloading location. A gate location is not a delivery plan. The driver needs to know which entrance to use, who will receive the load, where to stage if the road is blocked, whether radio communication is required, and whether traffic control is available.
Weather is another Arizona-specific operational factor. Summer heat can affect tire condition and equipment availability, while monsoon storms can turn unpaved access roads into a problem quickly. Northern Arizona adds elevation, winter weather, and grades that can change timing and route choices. These conditions do not always cancel a move, but they should be discussed before dispatch.
Build Time Into the Plan Where It Counts
The lowest transportation price can become expensive if the carrier arrives with the wrong trailer, no permit strategy, or no understanding of the loading site. For mining equipment, the better question is whether the plan accounts for all the work around the actual drive time.
That means confirming dimensions early, selecting the right trailer and axle count, reviewing the permitted route, preparing attachments, scheduling operators, and verifying site access. A properly planned move may involve more preparation up front, but it reduces roadside changes, rework at the mine, and costly equipment downtime.
Before setting the production schedule around a machine transfer, treat the transport plan as part of the project plan. The right heavy haul decision is usually made well before the truck reaches the gate.
