Lowboy Trailer Guide for Heavy Equipment Moves

A 75,000-pound excavator may fit on more than one trailer on paper. That does not mean every option will clear the first bridge, distribute weight legally, or get into the jobsite without creating a problem. This lowboy trailer guide explains how experienced heavy haul planners match the trailer to the machine, route, permit requirements, and loading conditions before a truck is dispatched.

Start With the Machine, Not the Trailer

The common question is, “What trailer do I need?” The better question is, “What does this complete move require?” Machine weight matters, but it is only one part of the decision. Overall transport height, width, length, axle locations, ground clearance, attachment configuration, and the loading location all affect the answer.

A tracked excavator, for example, can be within a standard lowboy's payload range but still be too tall once it is sitting on the deck. A dozer with a cab and blade may need its blade removed or transported separately to manage width and front overhang. A wheel loader may be legal in width but create an axle-weight issue because its weight is concentrated differently than a crawler machine.

The machine's actual shipping dimensions should be confirmed, not assumed from a brochure. Operating weight often excludes buckets, counterweights, guards, work tools, fuel, and material buildup. Contractors also need to identify modifications such as added guarding, wider track pads, or aftermarket attachments. Those details can change the trailer selection and permit category.

Lowboy Trailer Guide: Understanding the Main Configurations

“Lowboy” is a broad term. In the field, it can describe several trailer setups with very different capabilities. The useful distinction is not the name. It is how low the deck sits, how the load is carried, and how many axles are available to distribute weight.

A fixed-neck lowboy is often a practical choice for legal-weight or moderately oversize equipment. It has a low well deck and generally works well for excavators, loaders, smaller dozers, and equipment that can be loaded from ramps. Its advantages are straightforward operation and fewer moving parts. The tradeoff is loading angle and deck length. Some low-clearance machines or long tracked equipment may not load cleanly without blocks, ramps, or extra planning.

A detachable gooseneck trailer, commonly called an RGN, removes the front neck so equipment can be driven directly onto the deck from the ground. This is often the better choice for large excavators, pavers, scrapers, drill rigs, and machines that cannot safely climb ramps. The RGN's low deck also helps control overall height. Detachability adds capability, but it also requires room to detach and reconnect at both ends of the move. A tight equipment yard, steep shoulder, soft desert soil, or an active jobsite can make that process harder than it looks.

Stretch lowboys and stretch RGNs address long loads such as crane components, long industrial pieces, or equipment with substantial overall length. They solve one issue while creating others. More length can affect turning, bridge formulas, permit routing, escort requirements, and where the truck can stage. The longest trailer is not automatically the best trailer if a shorter configuration can carry the load legally and access the site more reliably.

Multi-axle lowboy and RGN configurations are used when weight, axle loading, or permit conditions require more distribution. Adding axles can reduce the load carried by each axle group, but it may increase overall length and limit maneuverability. For heavy construction and mining equipment, the proper setup may involve a jeep, booster, flip axle, or a more specialized multi-axle combination. The goal is not simply to add axles. It is to meet legal and permitted weights while keeping the equipment stable and the route workable.

Deck Height Is Often the First Constraint

Height drives many trailer decisions in Arizona, Nevada, and Southern California. Customers sometimes focus on a machine's width because it is visually obvious, while the real routing limitation is a cab, boom, exhaust stack, or upper structure that puts the loaded height near a bridge clearance.

A lowboy reduces height compared with a flatbed, but there is no universal deck height. Decks vary by trailer type, tire size, suspension, and configuration. A few inches can determine whether a route is simple or requires a major detour, a utility clearance review, or a different loading arrangement.

Excavators are a good example. Boom position, stick angle, bucket placement, and whether the bucket travels separately can change the loaded profile. The machine must be secured in a position that is both stable and within allowable dimensions. Trying to save time by leaving an attachment installed can cost more later if it forces a more restrictive permit or blocks a preferred route.

Weight Distribution Matters More Than Total Weight

A machine can weigh less than a trailer's advertised capacity and still be wrong for that trailer. Heavy haul planning is about where the weight lands, not just the gross number.

The tractor, trailer axles, and any additional axle groups must carry weight within legal limits or within the limits authorized by an oversize and overweight permit. A large excavator's counterweight, for instance, can create a concentrated load that needs careful placement in the well. The same applies to wheel loaders, cranes, and industrial equipment with an uneven center of gravity.

Load position affects steer axle weight, drive axle weight, trailer axle weight, and bridge compliance. Moving a machine forward or backward a few feet may materially change the axle readings. That is why experienced operators do not rely on a rough estimate and hope the scale ticket works out. They select the configuration, establish a loading plan, and verify weights where needed.

One mistake contractors make is assuming permits solve every weight issue. Permits allow specified dimensions and weights on an approved route. They do not make an improperly configured load acceptable, and they do not eliminate the need to account for bridge structures, axle spacing, roadway restrictions, or local access conditions.

Route and Permit Strategy Should Shape the Equipment Plan

A trailer that works on an open Interstate 10 corridor may not work for the last five miles to a mine, solar site, paving project, or urban jobsite. Route planning needs to account for more than posted bridge clearances. Turns, overhead utilities, roundabouts, median openings, construction zones, narrow shoulders, and road restrictions can all affect the move.

In the Southwest, seasonal weather and terrain add another layer. A route that is suitable during dry conditions can become unsuitable after a monsoon event. Mountain grades between Phoenix, Kingman, Flagstaff, Las Vegas, and Southern California require attention to braking, pulling capability, and load security. High winds can also matter for tall loads and wide equipment with exposed components.

Permit timing should be discussed early, especially when a machine is oversized in more than one dimension or crosses state lines. State permits, city restrictions, utility coordination, and escorts may all affect the schedule. A tight project start date is not a reason to skip planning. It is a reason to start the planning sooner.

Loading and Jobsite Access Can Decide the Trailer

The pickup and delivery sites are part of the transportation problem. Before dispatch, confirm the loading surface, available turning room, gate width, overhead clearance, traffic control needs, and whether the equipment is operational.

An RGN may be ideal for a machine that can drive on and off under its own power. But if there is no level space to drop the neck, a ramped lowboy or another loading method may be more practical. A Landoll tilt deck can be useful for certain equipment and site conditions, particularly where a low loading angle and self-loading capability are needed. It is not a replacement for an RGN on every large or heavy machine move.

Equipment preparation matters as much as trailer preparation. Remove loose materials, secure or remove attachments, retract or lock moving components, check for leaks, and confirm that the machine can be loaded safely. If a machine is disabled, say so at the start. Recovering a non-running excavator or loader requires different equipment, more time, and often a different site plan than a normal drive-on move.

Do Not Treat the Lowboy as a Commodity

Two quotes can show the same trailer type and still represent very different plans. Ask what configuration is being used, how the load will be measured and secured, whether permits are included, and how the carrier plans to access each site. The lowest number can become the expensive option if it depends on assumptions that fail once the truck arrives.
