Customers often provide the machine model and assume that tells the whole story. It is a useful starting point, but it is not enough to dispatch a heavy haul truck correctly. Blade and Ripper Decisions Should Happen Before the Truck Arrives
One common mistake contractors make is waiting until the truck is at the pickup location to decide whether the blade or ripper needs to come off. That creates a costly delay, especially if a field mechanic, lifting equipment, cribbing, or separate attachment transport is needed.
For some machines, removing the blade is the cleanest way to reduce width or improve loading clearance. For others, it adds more handling time and creates another item that must be loaded, secured, and delivered. A ripper can have the same effect. It may be practical to leave it installed if the loaded length and axle weights work, but removing it can make a difficult configuration much easier to permit and route.

Trailer Selection Is More Than a Weight Rating

The trailer choice affects legal axle weights, loaded height, turning behavior, and how easily the driver can get in and out of the pickup and delivery locations.

With larger machines, axle count is not a detail to leave until dispatch. A 9-axle combination may be the right answer when machine weight and dimensions require more legal carrying capacity. It costs more to mobilize than a lighter setup, but trying to force a heavy dozer onto an insufficient configuration creates greater risk: axle overloads, permit problems, restricted routing, or a load that cannot be positioned correctly.
Experienced heavy haul planners work backward from the machine's actual transport weight and dimensions. They then select the trailer, determine axle spacing and load position, and confirm whether the chosen route supports that configuration. That is a better process than quoting from a model number alone.
Route Planning Is About More Than Interstate 17
The usual Phoenix-to-Kingman corridor involves Interstate 17 north, then connections toward US-93 and Interstate 40 depending on the final destination. It is a familiar route, but familiar does not mean automatic. Oversize loads can face restrictions based on width, height, axle configuration, construction activity, bridge limitations, or permitted travel windows.
The route also needs to account for the ends of the move. A dozer leaving a Phoenix equipment yard may have plenty of room to load and turn. Dozers should not be loaded across a steep side slope or on soft material that can shift under the trailer.
At delivery, the site superintendent should know the expected arrival window and have a clear unloading area ready. That includes removing parked pickups, temporary barriers, loose materials, and other equipment from the maneuvering path. If the dozer is being unloaded directly into a work zone, the crew needs a plan for traffic control and machine startup.
